This photo captures four women of the Scaletta family. The photo, taken in Palermo, Sicily, shows Giuseppina in the front, her step-mother Antonina holding her half-sister Liboria in the back, and an elderly woman who may be her grandmother. Domenico, her father, left Sicily around 1887 to seek opportunity in America. This left Antonina to care for Giuseppe (4 years older than Giuseppina), in addition to Giuseppina and Liboria.
